Who We Are
- We are people who live and work in Western Lane County – anyone interested in prevention is welcome to join the Coalition.
- The Coalition works closely with the Lane County Prevention Team.
What is Prevention?
Prevention is: the process of creating conditions and/or attributes, which promote the well being of people, and reducing risk factors that contribute toward problem behavior while working to increase protective factors, resiliency and assets in a young person’s life. Learn more.
Florence Area Data
- In 2009, there were 57 liquor outlets in Florence, whose population is 9,580. That means that the rate of liquor outlets in 2009 was 5.95 per 1000 people, more than twice the rate for Lane County as a whole;
- Last year, 30.3% of Siuslaw School District 8th graders participated in playing cards (poker, etc.), compared to19.3% in Lane County and 18.8% in the State of Oregon;
- Last year 26% of Siuslaw School District 8th graders reported feeling so sad and hopeless almost every day for 2 weeks or more in a row that they stopped doing some usual activities, compared to 21% in Lane County and 22% in the State of Oregon;
- Last year, of the Siuslaw 8th graders who smoke cigarettes, 12.4% reported smoking one or more cigarettes in the last 30 days, compared to 6.9% in Lane County and 8.2% in the State of Oregon;
- Last year, of the Siuslaw 11th graders who drink alcohol, 47.2% reported having one or more drinks in the last 30 days, compared to 41% in Lane County and 36.3% in the State of Oregon;
- Last year, of the Siuslaw 11th graders who use prescription drugs to get high, 11.5% reported using prescription drugs without a doctor’s prescription to get high in the last 30 days, compared to 6% in Lane County and 6.6% in the State of Oregon.
What is the Prevention Coalition Doing?
- Looking at data from schools, local law enforcement, social services and researching evidence-based prevention strategies to shape community-supported education programs;
- Reviewing and monitoring success of supported activities;
- Becoming a primary source of alcohol and drug prevention information and resources in Western Lane County.
How to Get Involved
- Attend a meeting: The Coalition meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 3:30-5pm at the Florence Fire Station (2625 Hwy. 101, Florence)
- Join our email list
- Host a meeting
- Provide a training for Coalition members
- Invite Lane County Prevention Program & Coalition members to do a training for your group
- Help distribute coalition materials and information in your community
